The Birthday and The Blessing

The Kid and I shared a special day last week. I got a cake full of candles and The Kid got a name and a blessing! It was all together beautiful. The Nana was here and made The Cake. I've had the same birthday cake for as long as I can remember: a wacky cake with pink frosting. Recipe here:

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar
4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon vinegar
6 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup water

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
2. Sift flour, sugar, salt, soda, and cocoa together into a medium bowl. Make three depressions. Pour oil into one well, vinegar into second, and vanilla into third well. Pour water over all, and stir well with fork. Place in a greased and floured 8x8 cake pan.
3. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 30 to 40 minutes, or until tooth pick inserted comes out clean. Frost with your favorite icing.

The Kid had a beautiful blessing, stating that he will be an animal lover and that he will continue to be mild-mannered throughout his life. Wonderful things for his mama to hear. The Boy did a great job. And The Kid stayed awake the whole time, and never cried.

The blessing was at our home, since The Kid can't be exposed to lots of people for another two months.
How on earth did he get to be so cute?

He wasn't a fan of the hat.
But, he's easily calmed. See? Mild-mannered.
Don't you dare count those candles!
